*Me Before You (2016)* deserved better (spoilers)
Me Before You was a beautiful story about a woman trying to find her place in the world while helping a man enjoy his remaining six months on Earth. This is an over simplification but that is the one sentence summary of the movie. It’s so much more than that though! It’s an emotional tearjerker with plenty of laughs and palpable chemistry between the two leads!
It is a fantastic romance that blends quirky humor with a very controversial topic (Will’s decision to end his life, also known as Assisted Suicide). I will assume if you are reading this you have seen the film and I do not need to go too far in depth about the characters backstory. This post if going to be long enough. 😅
Did you know that Me Before You is the first of a trilogy of books about the life of Louisa Clark? I love the character of Louisa. She reminds me so much of me - a cheeky girl with enough spunk to charm a Disney villain and a fierce amount of love to give. The love shared between Louisa and our Will was so wonderful, the chemistry between them was fire, and it was heartbreaking watching how far both of them had come by the end of the movie.
The reception to the film wasn’t stellar and a lot of people were offended at the time by the handling of the topic of assisted suicide. I believe the filmmakers (as well as the author Jojo Moyes) treated with respect and dignity. It takes place at a licensed facility in a country where it is legal. However, because of this controversial topic, we were deprived of the rest of Louisa’s sequels and not to spoil too much about the series, we learn more about Will’s life BEFORE Louisa as well! We don’t get to see her grieve Will’s death or any of her future triumphs and sorrows, nor her adventures abroad. The title of the movie says it all, it was Me BEFORE you. We never got to see After You or Still Me which were both fantastic books as well.
Sorry for the rant, I’ve been trying to articulate my feelings on this movie for a while and just needed to get it out.
TL;DR - I got screwed out of my romance trilogy!
