Any advice for someone starting the game?

I’ve tried and failed to start this game several times.

On paper it’s right up my alley but I feel like I might be playing wrong. The game feels so slow and like narratively it’s taking ages to kick in.

After reading the love for this game I think I may just be playing the early game wrong so what’s your advice?
