Please advise on this sentence - hypothetical situation in a present tense narrative
I know that past tense is often used when referring to hypothetical situations, even in a present tense narrative. But I'm not sure if it applies in the below passage. Can someone clarify? Thanks!
"I hesitate. Even if BLANK can be trusted, she would have to alert the rest of the BLANK if I told her the truth. And if the real killer is a BLANK, they would know I’m poking into the past[.]()"
