Are the fancy tails worth it?

All feathertails are born with a special gift and we are led to believe they lose it as they mature. However we now we know that isn't the case and exchanging the feathertail gift for a tail is a choice.

So why would any dragon do that? A dragon with the gift would still be able to fight with teeth and claws plus whatever gift they have.

I don't see how a gift as powerful as Andarna's could possibly be equal to a poison tail.
