Don't be a victim of scammers!! Be alert

As Ramadan approaches many of you will encounter this. I work with Hajj and Umrah accommodation in Makkah. I've seen firsthand how scammers operate and it's crucial to be aware. This is my story and it's a warning. A few weeks ago as Ramadan was drawing closer I was near the Haram when a family approached me. They were well-dressed carrying documents and had two young children. They claimed to be pilgrims from ******** who had lost their money and missed their flight. They needed help with accommodation and food. The thought of them being stranded especially with Ramadan just around the corner made their plea even more compelling. I was taken in by their story especially the presence of the children. I gave them some money. The following week I saw them again in the same location repeating the same story to other people. It was a calculated deception. They were exploiting the kindness of pilgrims and others. This incident taught me a valuable lesson. Scammers target everyone regardless of background. They prey on compassion especially during Hajj and Umrah and even more so as we approach the blessed month of Ramadan. Here's what you need to know: Be extremely cautious of anyone approaching you with a sob story particularly if it involves lost money missed flights and children. Don't give cash directly. Instead offer to help them contact their embassy the police or a reputable charity. A genuine person in need will likely accept this offer. If they become evasive or insist on cash it's a red flag. Trust your instincts. If something feels wrong it probably is. Protect yourself your family and your fellow pilgrims especially during this holy month. Share this warning with everyone you know.
