Preparing for a tornado

I live in the Midwest with my husband and am trying to reasonably prepare for a possible severe storm or tornado. We have loads of extended family in the region, so my intent is to prepare supplies for the actual tornado strike and then a week after.

Other than keeping food, water, and medication on hand, what else do people recommend keeping in their house for such an event? I’ve never lived through a tornado strike, so I don’t know the subtleties of what to expect or prepare for.
