Is there a reason they made Rean so powerful?

Have any of the series creators mentioned why they made Rean so powerful as a main character? Estelle and Lloyd seem kinda normal in comparison (I know Van is on track to be a problem) but has it ever been stated why Rean is the Superman of the series so far?
