B.C. – Help to Buy Canadian by Saving Electricity
Hey fellow west-coasters – Wanted to give a friendly reminder about electricity. While we've heard lots about how Ontario and Quebec provide an enormous about of hydro power to New York state and the US East Coast in general, the same isn't true for this side of the country.
It would be nice if there was one unified Canadian grid, but this isn't the reality. Even if we wanted one, the construction, logistics, and coordination involved would take years, if not decades. Add to this the explosive population growth in B.C. over the past few decades, and the reality is that our province is a net importer of power from the United States. If Ontario and Quebec decide to retaliate against the USA by cutting power, B.C. could find ourselves caught in the crossfire.
If you want to make sure that all the electricity you're getting from BC Hydro is Canadian, you need to USE less. There are lots of domestic power projects being constructed in B.C., including green initiatives spearheaded by First Nations, but they take time. Saving power in the short-term means buying less from the U.S.
Food for thought! 💡
