Con Ed Phone Scam with Accurate Info
I received a call today from someone claiming to be from Con Edison. They told me my address, my Con Ed account number and my prior con ed account number, and they of course had my phone number. They even recited my last four digits of the credit card I use to pay my bill to Con Ed via the Bill Matrix platform they use. Their spiel was that I've been paying money into my "old account" not my new account number, and that they've sent me letters saying I have an outstanding balance and if I don't pay it, my electricity will be be cut off tomorrow. Conveniently, they take money over Zelle. Throughout this short call I also logged on Con Ed and saw that I do not have an outstanding balance- I paid my bill yesterday so I knew this but wanted to confirm- and a quick search on Google showed that Con Ed does not take money over Zelle, Cash App or Venmo so I told him to go fuck himself and hung up.
I know that Con Ed has recently rolled out new account numbers (https://www.coned.com/en/faqs/new-customer-service-system-faqs) so I think they're piggybacking off the confusion of this new integration.
Furthermore, I called Con Ed directly at the number found on their website and they offer a worker verification thing and someone picked up saying Con Ed does not call people and recited that they do not take payments via Zelle, Cash App or Venmo.
My greatest concern is how they got my personal information. I don't get my bill delivered by mail, and they had my payment history- as recent as one made yesterday to Con Ed including timestamps and confirmation numbers found on the payment processor Con Ed uses (Bill Matrix). Has there been an information leak from Con Ed and/or Bill Matrix? I take all security precautions e.g. password manager, and have had 2FA enabled on my Con Ed account for years. I haven't downloaded or visited anything suspicious.
